Tour Highlights
1. Bayernwald preserved Trench System: Bayernwald, or “Bavarian Forest,” was a heavily fortified German trench system in the Ypres Salient during World War I. This position was part of the German defensive lines that played a crucial role in the battles around Ypres, including the Fourth and Fifth Battles of Ypres.
2. Tyne Cot Cemetery (Passchendaele): Visit the world’s largest Commonwealth war cemetery, where 11,965 servicemen are laid to rest. The serene landscape and poignant memorials offer a sobering reminder of the war’s human cost.
3. Langemark German War Cemetery: Explore this significant site, which contrasts with Allied cemeteries and provides insight into the German perspective of the war. The mass graves and somber design evoke deep reflection.
4. Hill 60: Discover the site of intense mining warfare, where massive underground explosions reshaped the battlefield. The preserved craters and bunkers stand as testament to the fierce fighting that occurred here.
5. Essex Farm Cemetery and Advanced Dressing Station: Visit the location where Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae penned the iconic poem “In Flanders Fields.” The preserved bunkers and cemetery offer a poignant connection to the past.
6. Menin Gate Memorial (Ypres): Conclude your day at this monumental arch bearing the names of over 54,000 missing soldiers. If your schedule permits, experience the moving “Last Post” ceremony held every evening at 8:00 PM, honoring the fallen with a bugle call.
7. In Flanders Fields Museum: Tucked inside Ypres’ rebuilt Cloth Hall, the In Flanders Fields Museum plunges you straight into the heart of the Great War. Through soldiers’ stories, interactive displays, and haunting artifacts, it traces how a quiet Flemish landscape became one of history’s fiercest battlegrounds.

Niels picked us up at our hotel in his very comfortable van for the 1 hour journey to Flanders Fields. He took us to the American Cemetery and then on to a number of other cemeteries including Tyne Cot, Polygon Woods, Essex Farm, and Lejssenthoek Hospital. We also saw the Yorkshire Trench, Hill 60 and the Centipede. Niels booked us lunch and dinner at excellent establishments and we capped the day with the Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypres.
