A first visit will normally combine several different types of battlefield
site rather than repeating the same experience all day.
Morning
Begin with the wider Ypres story and one or two locations that
help establish the fighting, the people involved and the conditions
in which they served.
Midday
Continue through personal stories and themes such as trenches,
artillery, mining, medicine or a family connection, with time
for a relaxed lunch stop.
Afternoon
Explore Passchendaele and the wider Salient in greater depth,
then finish with the human cost and the way the war is remembered.
Passchendaele, Polygon Wood, Hill 60, Messines, Essex Farm,
Langemark German Cemetery, preserved trenches and the Menin Gate.
They are possibilities, not a promise that every site will be rushed
into one day.

We can follow a soldier through a photograph, a letter or diary,
his unit's movements and the battlefield connected to his story.
The wider military story
Personal stories are placed inside the battles around Ypres,
helping you understand what units were trying to achieve and
why particular places mattered.
Different experiences of the war
The day can explore frontline soldiers, artillery, medical care,
tunnelling, gas warfare, cemeteries, the missing, civilians and
the different ways the war has been remembered.
Your own connection
If you have a relative, regiment, memorial name or particular
subject in mind, the route can be built around it where practical.
Will we visit every place listed on the website?
No. The locations shown are examples, not a compulsory checklist.
The exact route depends on your interests, family connections, traffic, site access, opening hours and the historical story we are following.
I would rather give you enough time to understand a smaller number of meaningful places than rush through a long list simply to say we stopped there.

The normal full-day battlefield tour finishes at approximately 18:00.
If you would like to attend the evening Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, an extended-day option can be added to selected bookings. This gives you time in Ypres before the ceremony and includes the later return journey.
The Last Post extension is priced separately and is shown as an optional addition during booking.

Is the tour private or shared?
All Visit Flanders Fields tours are private for your group only. This allows the route, pace and stories to be adapted to your interests, nationality or family history.
Can we attend the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate?
Yes. You can extend the tour to include the daily Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres at 8 p.m. Your guide arranges the timing and return journey to Bruges afterward.
Can we be picked up somewhere other than Bruges?
Yes. Pickups from locations such as Ghent, Brussels, Lille or another nearby destination are possible on request and may require an extra fee. Tell us your plans in advance and the most convenient option can be arranged.
Can we be dropped off at a different location than the pickup point?
Yes. Drop off does not need to be the same as the pickup location. You can finish your tour in Bruges, Ypres, Ghent, Brussels or another nearby destination. Please share your plans in advance so the routing can be arranged.
Do I need to arrange transport myself?
No. Private transport is included from Bruges or Ypres. You can be collected at your hotel, accommodation or a central meeting point and returned after the tour.
What should we bring for the tour?
Comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing are recommended. Cameras, family documents, cemetery details or names of soldiers you want to trace are also welcome.
