Hi there, I’m Niels.

I’ve been fascinated by the stories of World War I for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Belgium, just a stone’s throw away from the historic Ypres Salient, I was surrounded by reminders of the past—silent witnesses to one of the most devastating conflicts in human history. From an early age, I felt a deep connection to the stories of the soldiers who fought here, the civilians who endured immense hardship, and the lasting impact the war left on this land. It was impossible to walk through the countryside without feeling the weight of history beneath my feet. The names on the memorials, the rows of headstones in the cemeteries, and the echoes of the Last Post at the Menin Gate all served as poignant reminders of the sacrifices made over a century ago.

As I grew older, my fascination deepened into a personal mission—to ensure these stories are not forgotten. I’ve spent years immersing myself in the history of this region, visiting museums, reading letters and diaries of soldiers, and speaking with historians who have dedicated their lives to preserving this past. To me, Flanders Fields is more than just a battlefield; it is a place where bravery, sacrifice, and resilience are etched into every corner. Every trench, crater, and poppy-covered field tells a story that deserves to be remembered. By sharing these stories, I hope to help others connect with this history, to honor those who came before us, and to ensure that their legacy continues to inspire future generations. Flanders Fields is not just about the past—it’s about remembrance, reflection, and the lessons we carry forward.

Honouring the fallen

I may be a local, but my connection to this region is so much more than that. I’m an amateur historian with a deep respect for the soldiers who fought and fell here. Every Flanders Fields tour I lead is my way of paying tribute to them. I want to guarantee that rather being mere dates in a textbook, their stories are living memories that continue to inspire us today.
