Pozières

Pozières sits on a strategic ridge north of the Albert-Bapaume road. During the Somme campaign, it became one of the most heavily contested positions, particularly associated with Australian forces.

Strategic importance

Control of Pozières meant control of observation. From the ridge, artillery could direct fire across wide areas. This made the village a prime objective.

Repeated attacks reduced Pozières to rubble.

Australian experience

Australian divisions fought here in brutal conditions. Casualties were severe. The ground was constantly shelled. Sleep was rare.

Pozières marked a transition. Australian forces moved from colonial contingents to experienced Western Front troops.

The landscape today

Little remains of the village as it was. Memorials mark the ridge. Walking here shows how exposure and elevation shaped combat.

Visiting today

Pozières should be visited with an understanding of artillery warfare. It illustrates how ground could become uninhabitable.
